Kybella Q&A

What is Kybella?

Kybella is a manmade injectable similar to dioxycholic acid, a substance occurring naturally in the human body. Dioxycholic acid attacks fat cells when injected into the body. Kybella is currently approved to treat the appearance of a double chin. The injections will be administered by a licensed healthcare provider. Kybella is injected directly under the skin of the chin to attack the excess fat cells that can accumulate there. Patients usually need a series of treatments to fully realize the benefits of the injections and may receive up to 50 injections per visit. The doctor will provide advice on the best number of treatments and injections to achieve the desired results.

How long does Kybella last?

The treatment is permanent, barring any further weight gain, as the treatment actually destroys fat cells. Kybella is also significantly less invasive than other treatments which target a double chin. Most patients will see an improvement following one treatment after any swelling subsides, although for optimal results, several treatments with no less than a month in between, may be needed.

Does the treatment hurt?

Patients might experience the slight pinching sensation associated with most injections during the process. Many clinicians will use a light pain medication or topical anesthetic during the treatment to reduce any discomfort. Following the treatment some patients experience minor swelling or discoloration but the effects fade in a couple of days and any discomfort can be managed with over the counter anti-inflammatories. Treatment should not inhibit the patient’s daily activities.

Can Kybella be used in other body parts?

Kybella is currently only indicated and FDA approved for the treatment of excess fat under the chin. Further testing on the safety and results of using Kybella on other body parts is currently being explored. If a patient has concerns or questions about reducing the appearance of fat in other areas, he or she should speak to a physician about slimming options. Kybella has been tested and approved for use on the chin. It is recommended to only have injections administered by a licensed healthcare provider.
