Microneedling Q & A

by David Soleymani, MD, FAAD

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that rejuvenates and revitalizes your skin. Microneedling involves using a small handheld machine containing 12 ultrathin needles to create controlled microscopic injuries in the treatment areas.

This needling stimulates your body to produce more collagen, which in turn creates smoother and younger-looking skin.

Which areas of the body are treatable with microneedling?

The most popular area for microneedling is the face, although the treatment can rejuvenate skin in any area that’s exposed to the sun regularly, including:

  • Neck
  • Chest
  • Arms
  • Hands
  • Legs

What are the effects of microneedling?

Microneedling can dramatically enhance your overall appearance by giving you better skin tone and texture. Some of microneedling’s other skin benefits include:

  • Smoothing of fine lines
  • Reduction of hyperpigmentation
  • Reduction of pore size
  • Filling in facial folds
  • Filling in acne scar depressions

How does microneedling treatment work?

Your microneedling practitioner cleans your face thoroughly to prepare it for treatment and then applies a topical anesthetic cream.

The anesthetic cream takes effect in half an hour or less, and you’re ready for treatment. Your practitioner gently glides the microneedling device across your skin while you relax. Although you might feel a tingling sensation, microneedling isn’t painful thanks to the anesthetic cream.

Your treatment will generally take less than an hour, and you can return home immediately afterward.

What is microneedling recovery like?

Expect some redness and swelling in the treatment area for a day or two after the microneedling procedure. Tiny scabs typically surface in those first few days as well, and they may feel a bit itchy. Resist scratching or otherwise agitating your skin, as these scabs need to slough off naturally in the next week.

You can follow your daily routine after microneedling treatment, but you should avoid sun exposure for a couple of days. You can wear makeup starting at about 12 hours after the microneedling treatment, but be extra gentle when washing your skin (no scrubbing until you’re fully healed).
